Choo Choo 9 Miler and 5K - VIRTUAL RUN ONLY

Sun April 5, 2020 Columbus, OH US 43215 Directions
The Choo Choo 9 Miler and 5K have been moved to virtual only!

After careful consideration and review of Governor DeWine’s press conference on March 12, 2020, the Choo Choo 9 Miler and 5K leadership is announcing a transition of all events to virtual-only, all physical events on Sunday, April 5 are canceled.

The race committee decided to take this action based on the most recent recommendations and directives of Gov. DeWine and Dr. Acton of the State Health Department to limit the spread of COVID-19 virus in our community and the State of Ohio. We appreciate the difficult decisions and actions the Governor, Dr. Acton, and his entire Executive Team have had to make to proactively contain the spread of Coronavirus and COVID-19 in the State. The race committee wants to support and participate in those efforts and will do everything we can to that end. This means converting all of the Choo Choo events to virtual-only. We know this is not the way any of us envisioned the start of spring, and we share your disappointment. We will work with our sponsors, vendors and trusted partners to notify attendees and volunteers.

We are converting all registrations to virtual event participation. Medals and t-shirts have been paid for, ordered, and are on their way. We will have details regarding in-person pickup of these materials coming in the days ahead. There will be mailing options provided for those outside the central Ohio area on a case-by-case basis, please contact race director Andy Harris via email at We will have details out via email and the race website early next week regarding the reporting of times for race results. No awards will be given, but we do hope that all will run their own race and let us know how they did so we can share your accomplishments on the results pages. Additionally, all registrants will receive a FREE deferral to the 2021 Choo Choo events. As logistics are finalized with the City for our 2021 event, details on the FREE deferral will be communicated so you can take advantage of that complimentary registration.

We want to thank our sponsors, volunteers, and participants for their support and understanding. Updates will be forthcoming in the following days with more information on the impacts of this decision and a path forward for the Choo Choo participants. Thank you.

Andy Harris | Choo Choo 9 Miler & 5K | Race Director

Early Packet Pickup

“How/when do I get my goods?” - a pandemic-related update: Medals were ordered months ago and have arrived recently. They look awesome, and we can’t wait to see social media pics of all of you holding up your bling! With race shirts, it’s our goal to order quantities as close to what we’ll need as possible so we keep our budget on the proper side of the line. This means that we’re typically placing our shirt order 10-12 days prior to race day. Our shirt order date this year was Monday, March 23. As you very likely are aware, Governor DeWine issued a shelter in place order on March 22 that was effective at the end of the day on the 23rd. This directive included language dictating that only essential businesses should remain in operation to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus. Unfortunately (for the purposes of the Choo Choo), the closings include both the distributor and printer of our t-shirts as well as all Columbus Running Company retail locations. Until the shelter-in-place is lifted by the government, the production of the event shirts is on pause so that our community can be kept as safe as possible. While this is certainly disappointing and we’d prefer everyone to be receiving their race gear at an early packet pickup event this week, we’re all aware that the COVID-19 situation has created extraordinary circumstances and that the safety of our community stands above all else.

Assuming nothing changes with the current shelter-in-place order (set to expire at the end of the day on April 6), this means that shirts will be shipped from the distributor on/about April 7 and printing will commence upon arrival at our local printer. From there, we’ll schedule an extended “packet pickup” at CRC Westerville where you’ll receive your shirt, medal, and Choo Choo bib number. Those of you that were coming to the event from out of town and emailed me will have your race gear compiled and sent to you directly upon our receipt of all items.
